Als Gott die Welt erschaffen hatte, beauftragte er drei Engel, jeweils einen Sack mit Intelligenz, Weisheit und Dummheit gleichmäßig über die Erde zu verteilen. Ausgerechnet über Schelm (= die polnische Stadt Chelm) platzte der Sack mit der Dummheit, und der gesamte Inhalt ergoss sich über diesen Ort. Die Bewohner halten sich seitdem für die Weisesten der Weisen. Aaron, ein elfjähriger Waisenjunge, findet im Hause seines Onkels Schlemihl in Schelm eine neue Heimat. Er erkennt sofort, wie es in Wahrheit in den Köpfen der Schelmer aussieht. Als der Zauberer Darko mit einem üblen Trick das Buch der Wunder in seinen Besitz bringt und mit dem zum Leben erweckten Golem das ganze Dorf zerstört, feiern die Schelmer das Ereignis ahnungslos als Lichterfest. Die einzigen, der jetzt noch helfen können, sind Aaron, seine kluge Ziege Zlateh und der knapp 412 Jahre alte Kobold Lantuch. Sie verjagen den Zauberer und seinen Golem und verhindern, dass weiteres Unheil angerichtet werden kann. Die Bürger von Schelm zerstreuen sich nach der Zerstörung ihres Dorfes über die ganze Welt.
Das Drehbuch beruht auf Geschichten von Isaac Bashevis Singer, der meinte: "Gehst du weg von Schelm, kommst du zurück nach Schelm. Bleibst du in Schelm, bist du sicherlich in Schelm. Alle Wege führen nach Schelm. Die ganze Welt ist ein riesiges Schelm."



When God created the world, he asked three angels to distribute intelligence, wisdom, and foolery among the earth. When they were just flying over the city of Chelm, the bag with foolery burst and the whole content flew. Since then, the people of Chelm think that they are the brightest men in the world.
Accompanied by his wisecracking pet goat Zlateh, the eleven years old orphan Aaron journeys to the village of Chelm to stay with his Uncle Shlemiel, Aunt Sarah and their three daughters. Chelm is an idyllic, peaceful village filled with lovable fools, and it has recently come under attack by an evil sorcerer Darko. With the aid of his wily fox, the sorcerer steals the magical Book of Marvels from the Chelmites. He conjures up a Golem, a gargantuan beast, which he orders to destroy the defenseless town. Together with Zlateh and the 412 years old goblin Lantuch Aaron embarks on an exciting, comical odyssey to foil the wicked wizard and prevent him from taking over the whole world. In the end, the Chelmites left their destroyed town and scattered all over the world.
That hilarious and heartwarming film is based on stories by Nobel Prize-winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer who said: "The whole world is one big Chelm."
