Der Journalist, Schriftsteller, Friedensaktivist Uri Avnery wird am 10. September 1923 als Helmut Ostermann in Beckum, Westfalen, geboren. Als Zehnjähriger emigriert er nach Palästina, wo er von 1938 bis 1942 für den Irgun kämpft. Seit der Gründung des Staates Israel setzt sich Uri Avnery intensiv für die Existenz eines eigenen palästinensischen Staates ein. Er wird Gründungsmitglied des Israeli Council for Israeli-Palestinian Peace und gibt seine eigene politische Zeitung Ha'olam Ha'zeh heraus. Im Jahre 1974 wird er der erste Israeli, der in direkten Kontakt mit der PLO tritt, acht Jahre später trifft er im belagerten Beirut Yassir Arafat. Als Gründungsmitglied der Friedensgruppe Gusch Schalom kämpft er, gemeinsam mit seiner Ehefrau Rachel, für ein friedliches Zusammenleben. Eines ihrer Hauptziele ist die Beendigung der Besatzung. Für sein Engagement erhielt Avnery eine Reihe von Auszeichnungen, wie zum Beispiel den Palästinensischen Preis für Menschenrechte (verliehen von LAW, der Palästinensischen Gesellschaft für Menschenrechte, 1998) und den Alternativen Nobelpreis (The Right Livelihood Award 2001). Regisseur Yair Lev zeigt das Porträt eines unbeugsamen, starken, aber auch schwierigen Menschen. In Interviews lässt er Freunde und ehemalige Bekannte zu Wort kommen.

Uri Avnery was born as Helmut Ostermann on September 10, 1923 in Beckum, Germany. Uri grew up in a strong Zionist home, and in 1933 he, along with his family, immigrated to Palestine. At the age of 15 he joined the Irgun to fight the British who were invading Palestine. Later he became a founding member of the Israeli Council for Israeli-Palestinian Peace as well as the publisher of Ha'olam Ha'zeh, his political magazine. Uri Avnery has campaigned unequivocally for peace between Jews and Palestinians based on mutual acceptance and respect. Since 1948 he has advocated the setting up of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. In 1974, Uri Avnery was the first Israeli to establish contact with PLO leadership. In 1982 he was the first Israeli ever to meet Yassir Arafat, after crossing the lines in besieged Beirut. As founding member of the peace group Gush Shalom he and his wife Rachel fight for justice. One of their main goals is putting an end to the occupation. In 1998 he was awarded the Palestinian Award for Human Rights (by LAW, the Palestinian Society for Human Rights) and in 2001 he received the Right Livelihood Award. For the first time the cinema gets to grip with the complex, contradictory and controversial figure, the veteran peace campaigner and prominent journalist.
