Deutschland zur Jahreswende 1932/33. Der jüdische Professor Hans
Mamlock ist Chefarzt einer chirurgischen Klinik und politisch vollkommen
uninteressiert. Als sein Sohn Rolf sich dem kommunistischen
Widerstand gegen den aufkeimenden Nationalsozialismus anschließt,
weist er ihn aus dem Haus. Doch Professor Mamlock gerät bald selbst in
die Mühlen der Zeit. Nie hat er es für möglich gehalten, dass er einmal
mit der Aufschrift „Jude“ auf dem Arztkittel durch die Straßen laufen
muss. Friedrich Wolf, der Vater des Regisseurs Konrad Wolf, schrieb das
gleichnamige Drama 1933 während seines Exils in der Sowjetunion. Es
wurde am 5. September 1938 in Moskau uraufgeführt und im selben
Jahr vom sowjetischen Regisseur Adolf Minkin verfilmt. „Wolfs Version
ist geprägt von bemerkenswerten darstellerischen Leistungen und einem
nüchternen Realismus, der auf pathetische Effekte ganz verzichtet und
die Atmosphäre jener Zeit überzeugend einfängt.“ (Dieter Krusche:

Professor Hans Mamlock is the distinguished chief of surgery in a hospital. Although the he is Jewish, he remains unconcerned with politics and the growing Nazi threat. Mamlock identifies strongly as a German, and he believes his culture to be simply incapable of the common barbarism associated with the Nazi party. When Rolf joins the Communists in resisting the Nazis, Mamlock throws him out of his house. As the persecution of Jews intensifies during the 1930s, Mamlock's own daughter is targeted for anti-Semitic attacks at her school. By 1938, anti-Jewish racial laws demand Mamlock’s removal from office. He is physically marched from the hospital by Nazi guards. Professor Mamlock was originally written as a play in 1933 by the director’s father, Friedrich Wolf. At that time, only few people – like Friedrich Wolf – anticipated the horrors of Nazi Germany.
