The Grey Zone behandelt neben der Geschichte des einzigen bewaffneten Häftlingsaufstands im KZ Auschwitz-Birkenau auch die Rolle der so genannten Sonderkommandos: Juden, die in den Krematorien und Gaskammern zur Zwangsarbeit eingesetzt wurden. Das Drehbuch von Tim Blake Nelson (Darsteller in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?) basiert auf der 1946 erschienenen Erinnerungsschrift Ich war Arzt in Auschwitz des rumänischen Pathologen Miklos Nyiszli, sowie auf fünf Tagebüchern, die von Mitgliedern des Sonderkommandos verfasst und später in Birkenau entdeckt wurden.

The Grey Zone is Tim Blake Nelson’s adaptation of his own play, which
was based on the book Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account by
Miklos Nyiszli, a Jewish doctor who was in that concentration camp. The
events in the film deal primarily with an uprising of inmates of
Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Sonderkommando, a group of Jews forced
to work for the Nazis in exchange for possibly a couple more months of
life. „Nelson unflinchingly emphasizes the horrible actuality of the
camps, the constantly humming machinery of death and the perpetually
billowing smoke from the crematoria. He also probes the difficulty of
retaining one's humanity amidst such horror. Superbly acted by all concerned, the exceptionally moving The Grey Zone emerges as one of the finest, most humane and important Holocaust movies ever made. It's
