Adolf Frankl wird am 12. Februar 1903 in Pressburg/Pozsony/Bratislava
geboren. Nach der Matura nimmt er Kunst- und Malunterricht und studiert
an der Technischen Hochschule in Brno/Brünn. Nebenbei betätigt er
sich als Karikaturist und Zeichner. Am 28. September 1944 wird er verhaftet
und zunächst in das Konzentrationslager Sered, dann nach
Auschwitz-Birkenau deportiert. Nach der Befreiung kehrt Adolf Frankl
zunächst in seine Heimatstadt zurück. 1949/50 emigriert er mit seiner
Familie nach Wien, wo er am 18. August 1983 stirbt. Sein Leben und
Werk werden von seinem Sohn Thomas in Visionen aus dem Inferno
gezeigt. „Mit meinen Werken habe ich allen Völkern dieser Welt ein
Mahnmal gesetzt. Es soll niemandem, egal welcher Religion oder politischen
Anschauung, dieses oder ähnliches widerfahren!“ (Adolf Frankl)
The paintings of Adolf Frankl (1903 Bratislava – 1983 Vienna) narrate the
trauma of the Holocaust. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the
end of the Second World War and the liberation of the Nazi concentration
camps, Frankl's son Thomas introduced a documentary about his
father's life and paintings. Adolf Frankl’s „artworks convey the horror of
the Holocaust far more vividly than many books. The film too is an artwork
in itself. The technique of focusing on the paintings then dissolving
into photo stills before cutting back to the paintings is extremely effective.“
