Madame Rosa, eine ehemalige Prostituierte und Auschwitzüberlebende, wohnt im Pariser Stadtteil Belleville, wo sie sich um Kinder von Prostituierten kümmert. Ihr besonderer Liebling ist der vierzehnjährige Mohammed, der Momo genannt wird. Immer wieder wird Madame Rosa von quälenden Erinnerungen an das Konzentrationslager verfolgt. Als sich ihr gesundheitlicher Zustand dramatisch verschlechtert, ist es Momo, der ihr in den letzten Tagen beisteht. Simone Signoret (1921–1985) in einer ihrer berührendsten Rollen.

Madame Rosa is an ageing former prostitute who, in her dotage, makes a living by caring for the children of other prostitutes in Paris. She is especially fond of fourteen year old Mohammed who is called Momo. Haunted by memories of her experiences in a Nazi concentration camp, Rosa is seized with the notion that the Gestapo is still after her. She begs Momo not to give away her „hiding place.“ The boy keeps his promise, even after her death.
