Das Sequel zu The Jolson Story (linke Spalte) beschreibt den weiteren Weg
Al Jolsons, der geprägt ist von ausschweifendem Lebenswandel und der
Angst, künstlerisch zu versagen. Eine Comeback-Tour durch amerikanische
Militärcamps lässt ihn wieder zur alten Form auflaufen. Durch eine schwere
Krankheit, die die Amputation eines Lungenflügels zur Folge hat, verfällt er in
Depression. Im Militärhospital lernt er die Krankenschwester Ellen kennen,
die ihn dazu ermutigt, trotz der Behinderung seine Laufbahn fortzusetzen.
Drehbuchautor Buchman hat den Charakter seines Titelhelden genau
getroffen, “by mixing in a little vinegar with some sugar has come up with a
reasonable accurate biographical sketsch rounding out the second quarter
century in the career of a great performer”, urteilte The New York Times. Die
zentralen Darsteller sind, mit Ausnahme von Barbara Hale, dieselben wie im
Biopic von 1946, und so spielt der Wiener Ludwig Donath auch hier die Rolle
des Kantors Yoelson, als Vater von Al. Donath war 1938 in die USA geflohen,
wo er in zahlreichen Anti-Nazi-Filmen eingesetzt wurde und vor allem wegen
seiner Hitlerdarstellungen zu einiger Bekanntheit gelangte.

This sequel to The Jolson Story, picks up the singer's career just as he has
returned to the stage after a premature retirement. His wife has left him and
the appeal of the spotlight isn't what it used to be. This time, he trades in
the stage for life in the fast lane: women, horses, travel. It takes the death
of Moma Yoelson and World War II to bring Jolson back to earth - and to the
stage.
