Der Chemiker und SS-Obersturmführer Kurt Gerstein ist für Produktion von
Zyklon B und dessen Lieferung an das Konzentrationslager Auschwitz verantwortlich. Doch als ihm klar wird, wofür das Gift benötigt wird, versucht er
mit allen Mitteln, die Lieferungen zu verzögern. Bei seinem Widerstand wird
er vom jungen Jesuiten Ricardo Fontana unterstützt, der Papst Pius XII. bitten
will, öffentlich gegen Hitler Stellung zu beziehen. Als Vorbilder dienten dem
Autor Rolf Hochhuth der Berliner Dompropst Bernhard Lichtenberg, der sich
öffentlich für die verfolgten Juden einsetzte und in Gestapo-Haft starb, sowie
der polnische Pater Maximilian Kolbe, der in Auschwitz sein Leben für das
eines Familienvaters opferte. Ihnen ist Amen/Der Stellvertreter gewidmet.

Newly commissioned SS Lieutenant and chemist, Kurt Gerstein, discovers that
the Zyklon B pellets he has developed to disinfect soldiers‘ drinking water are
being used to gas Jews. Recruited to help streamline the death camp process
by a team of SS officers, Gerstein secretly approaches Vatican representatives.
Writer Rolf Hochhuth has dedicated his play The Deputy to the memory of
Father Maximilian Kolbe and Provost Bernhard Lichtenberg. Provost Lichtenberg
prayed openly for the Jews and was arrested by the Gestapo.
