Am 18. September 2007 hätte Leon Askin seinen hundertsten Geburtstag
gefeiert. Zehn Jahre zuvor drehte der österreichische Filmemacher Egon
Humer ein Porträt über den großen Künstler und sein Leben in Wien (Weltpremiere: Jüdische Filmwoche Wien 1997). „In seiner bewegenden Dokumentation zeichnet Egon Humer ein Porträt des neunzigjährigen Schauspielers, das über Hollywood-Anekdoten hinausgeht.“ (Michael Omasta, Falter 41/97)

Austrian filmmaker Egon Humer creates an intimate portrait of the Viennese
Jewish actor Leon Askin (1907 - 2005), who was driven out of Austria by the
Nazis and made a career as a supporting actor in Hollywood. (He returns to
Austria in 1994 as an octogenarian.) The director watches closely the life of
Leon Askin in Vienna: the private person in everyday life, in different encounters,
at work on stage - with side-glances into Vienna's theatrical landscape.
A portrait that also leads into other aspects of his life: solitude, the struggle
for health and respect, the set-backs of aging, the self-examination of his
