Die Hauptfigur des Filmes ist der jüdische Professsor Arthur Levi, der im
Deutschland der 1930er-Jahre mit Antisemitismus konfrontiert wird, als
eines seiner Werke von der Berliner Akademie der Künste abgelehnt wird.
1933 gedreht, ist der Film die erste Produktion in einer Reihe, die sich mit
der Situation deutscher Jüdinnen und Juden auseinandersetzen sollte. Die
Geschichte wurde in den USA zunächst ohne Untertitel und in den Jahren
1937, 1939 und 1941 unter den Titeln A Jew in Exile, Nazi Terror und The
Jew in Germany gezeigt. Erst 1999 wurde er vom National Center for Jewish
Film in Brandeis, Massachusetts, wiederentdeckt und restauriert.

Arthur Levi is a German-Jewish artist who experiences the new German anti-
Semitism when his masterpiece, a portrait of his Polish-born father entitled
The Eternal Wanderer, is rejected by the Berlin Academy of Art, which also
asks his resignation as professor. The Wandering Jew is a unique find: the
first American feature film to depict the situation of Jews in Nazi Germany,
and the only Yiddish-language film of its era to address this subject.
