In Marock erzählt die marokkanische Regisseurin Laïla Marrakchi, die 1975
in Casablanca geboren wurde, von einer Liebesgeschichte Ende der 1990er-
Jahre. Eine Gruppe junger Leute aus reichem Elternhaus erlebt in Casablanca
eine wilde Zeit mit Partys, Liebesgeschichten und dem Wissen, dass nach
dem Ende der Schulzeit alles anders sein wird. Zu dieser Gruppe gehört die
siebzehnjährige Rita. Sie ist Muslima, doch Kopftuch, gesenkter Blick und
das Fasten zu Ramadan sind nicht das Ihre. Viel mehr interessiert sich Rita
für den Juden Youri, den hübschesten Burschen der Schule. Obwohl sie aus
einem liberalen, nichtreligiösen Elternhaus stammt, kann sie ihrer Familie
nichts von ihrer Liebe erzählen.

Marock is the story of Rita, a 17 year old Moroccan girl, who falls in love
with Youri, a Jewish boy. Rita is part of the Moroccan upper social class,
and comes from a liberal non-religious Muslim family. Although religion is
not a social barrier in the daily interaction of Jews and Muslims, it becomes
a barrier and a taboo when it comes to dating between both groups. Laïla
Marrakchi's movie successfully points out unexpressed and taboo aspects
of the Moroccan high-class society, portraying the everyday life of these
teenagers, that is depicted with surprising accuracy, both on the Jewish and
Muslim side.
