Brasilien 1970. Seit sieben Jahren regiert eine rechte Militärdiktatur das
Land, und in Mexiko versucht die brasilianische Fußballmannschaft, den
dritten Weltmeisterschaftstitel zu erringen. Mauro, Sohn einer katholischen
Mutter und eines jüdischen Vaters, ist ein fußballbegeisterter Zwölfjähriger,
der den Beginn dieser Veranstaltung nicht erwarten kann. Die Zeit bis dahin
vertreibt er sich mit Tischfußball und Phantasien über seine Nationalmannschaft.
Kurz vor der WM muss Mauro mit seinen politisch links gerichteten
Eltern Hals über Kopf von seiner Heimatstadt Belo Horizonte nach São Paulo
reisen. Angeblich fahren sie in die Ferien, und Mauro soll so lange bei seinem
Großvater Mótel bleiben. Pünktlich zum Beginn der Meisterschaft wollen sie
wieder zurück sein.

Brazil in 1970. Mauro Stein, a 12-year old boy, is suddenly deprived of the
company of his parents, who are political activists on the run from the harsh
military government, which is strongly repressing leftists all over the country.
Against this backdrop of fear and political persecution, the country is at the
same time bursting with enthusiasm for the coming World Cup, to be held in
Mexico, the first one to be transmitted live via satellite. Unable to take care of
their only child, the Steins, who live in Belo Horizonte, drive all the way to São
Paulo to deliver the boy to his paternal grandfather, Mótel.
