AUSTRIAN PREMIERE
1943 in Chernovtsiitz, western Ukraine. To save him from deportation, Yulia, a Jewish woman, entrusts her 11-year-old son Hugo to her childhood friend Mariana, who works as a prostitute in a brothel. German soldiers come and go there every day. Locked in the small closet of Mariana's bedroom, Hugo's existence is based on the sounds and scenes he hears through the walls. Using contrasting lighting effects, the camera translates Hugo's fantasies into impressive images. But when the customers have left, Mariana invites the boy into her room and envelops him in gentleness and care.
